Translation of literature is often talked about in mournful tones. Translation is loss, translation is betrayal, a translation of a work of literature is a pale shadow of the original: these are the things we habitually say and think about literary translation. But none of these statements capture the fact that a translator is creating, in essence, a new work of art in a different linguistic and cultural context -- and that this challenge is itself a source of artistic creativity. Through sharing his experiences as a translator of Chinese poetry and fiction and as the English editor for one of China's premier literary magazines, Austin Woerner will share his insights into the process of making Chinese literature come alive in English.
